Solomiya №6

solomiya — a magazine created in April 2022 by Sebastian Wells and Vsevolod Kazarin in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The English-language publication focuses on conveying contemporary realities through the eyes of young Ukrainian creatives.
The State of the Nation issue focuses on texts that reflect on the many experiences of not belonging to a nation in the sense prescribed to it, while exploring both the heights and depths of being “in between”: through movement and migration, through doubts about the prospects of the war, and through a desire for forms of political agency not organized along national lines.
It questions traditions that, since the Nazi era, have long served as carriers of national sentiment in Germany; reflects on the relationship between decoloniality and nationalism in the contemporary art world; uses counter-mapping to examine the political imagination of ancient Mediterranean societies; and delves into new forms of artistic mentorship that seek to break free from the constraints of the postcolonial era in Ghana.
