The end of a legend

Yurii Shevelov is one of the most prominent intellectuals in Ukrainian cultural history. He spent his youth in Kharkiv, lived under Nazi occupation, stayed in displaced persons camps in postwar Germany and later taught at Harvard and Columbia.

This edition focuses on presenting the Shevelov we need here and now. The texts are arranged chronologically (1943–1997), forming a half-century panorama. This structure allows readers to trace the evolution of his ideas and to observe fifty years of Ukrainian intellectual history in exile. These are sharp, uncompromising and deeply original texts, united by a clear and recognizable intellectual agenda.

All texts are presented in accordance with the 1928 “Kharkiv orthography”.
