Japanese Manhole Covers

This book began with Serhii Filonenko’s casual habit of photographing manhole covers while travelling through Japan. At first, the images served simply as visual notes — a way of capturing a detail that caught his attention amid the countless impressions of the journey.

Over time, the growing collection developed into a project of its own. Taken without any initial intention of creating a series, the photographs came together to form a distinctive catalogue of urban details and local visual culture.
