The Lady of Hlukhiv. Novellas. Short Stories

The series “Non-Canonical Canon” is a way to revisit authors we didn’t fully know or whose texts we read without understanding their historical context. Each work is accompanied by reading guides from Ukrainian literary scholars.

Yurii Kosach — a prose writer and poet, nephew of Lesya Ukrainka and grandson of Olena Pchilka — lived a life that could easily become the plot of an adventure novel.

This edition brings together his most well-known works: the novellas The Lady of Hlukhiv, Aeneas and the Lives of Others, An Evening at Rozumovskyi’s, as well as a selection of short stories united by themes of exile, alienation, rootlessness, the conscious choice of identity and the connection between Ukraine and the West.

Kosach masterfully explores the psychology of his characters — naive young men, femme fatales, powerful women, intellectuals and artists. What unites them is a search for their true selves, a desire for freedom and a drive for change.
