CAMERA LUCIDA

“Camera Lucida. Reflections on Photography” is a canonical study by French philosopher Roland Barthes dedicated to the photographic medium. Without exaggeration, it remains one of the most influential texts on photography and has not lost its relevance, though it has never been translated into Ukrainian until now.

“Camera Lucida” is Barthes’s final book, published just months before his death. This short work is both an exploration of the nature of photography and a personal reflection on the death of his mother, whose true image he seeks in a childhood photograph.

The emotional intensity with which Barthes mourns transforms cultural analysis into a phenomenological one: for him, photography appears as asymbolic, outside semiotics and capable of affecting emotions and the body beyond rational analysis.
