This tragic experience is depicted in Ivan Bahrianyi’s novel The Garden of Gethsemane. Through the story of Andrii Chumak the author shows in detail how the Soviet repressive system functioned — how it enslaved and destroyed people regardless of their achievements, background, age or gender. Doctor, poet, school director — in prison, your past meant nothing: no matter how much you achieve, you still end up at the very bottom. Yet despite these horrors, Bahrianyi insists that resistance to evil is necessary even when it seems futile, and that the final choice always remains with the individual.
