The Chronicle of Ukrainian Design #4
31€
“The Chronicle of Ukrainian Design” is a periodical print publication about the history and development of Ukrainian design, initiated by the design bureau Spiilka. The magazine is an attempt to trace and showcase how Ukrainian design identity was formed and transformed over time.
The fourth issue explores the unexpected connections between Opishnia ceramics and the Ukrainian avant-garde, theatrical scenography and contemporary type design, Eneida and “colorfulness,” weightlifters and documentary filmmakers, along with many other cross-cultural phenomena in Ukrainian design.
Featured topics include: Anatol Petrytskyi, whose scenography inspired even Picasso; the visual identity of the Franko Theatre, which shaped the tone of today’s theatrical renaissance; the visual language of Ukrainian Theater, developed together with type designer Dmytro Rastvortsev; the NAMU identity project by Banda Agency and the typographic legacy of Vasyl Khomenko, thanks to whom the printed edition of Eneida with illustrations by Bazylevych appeared in 1969 — itself the subject of an entire design story. A separate section is dedicated to contemporary projects: MEGOGO, the traveling art space MOT (Module of Temporality), the Brave and Docudays UA festivals and the visual identity of Eurovision 2017.
